Spanish Shipping Awards
First edition of Spanish Shipping Awards postponed
In light of the current difficult situation facing the Spanish Maritime Industry, we have decided to postpone the first edition of the Spanish Shipping Awards. We hope for a swift recovery in the sector so that we can once again consider holding these prestigious awards.
It should be remembered that the Spanish Shipping Awards were presented at the beginning of this year for the purpose of acknowledging and rewarding the achievements and merits of the Spanish Maritime Industry and to promote the prestige of Spain as one of the most important maritime industry centres in the world.
As mentioned above, the Spanish maritime sector is not enjoying its finest moment and there are two basic reasons for this: the first is the current economic and financial crisis affecting not only Spain but also the rest of the world; the second, and perhaps even more important cause, is the suspension of the “tax lease” (system of tax benefits for shipyards, shipowners and banks applied to orders for new vessels) by the European Commission. This has paralysed the entire sector and led to consequences of which we are all aware.
Finally, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the collaborating organisations who have lent their support to the holding of these awards from the outset. We would also like to thank all the companies who have submitted their nominations for the different Spanish Shipping Awards categories. Our hope is that very shortly we will be able to count on your support once again.
Yours faithfully,
Esperanza Rico
